Project Description

In the Spring of 2017, Hawaiian Community Development Board proposed the Hale Makana O Maili (HMoM) project, a 52-unit multi-family affordable rental housing development on a 1.95 acre portion of a 2.78 acre parcel in the ili of Maili, in the ahupua‘a of Lualualei, in the district of Waiʻanae on the island of Oʻahu. The development will consist of 6 buildings, a central park, adequate parking and a perimeter fence.

The primary purpose of the project is to provide much-needed, long-term affordable housing to the Waianae Coast communities. It is designed to serve individuals and families with a 30%, 50% or 60% Area Median Income (AMI) with quality affordable housing options where they can feel secure and proud of their home. Based on the high demand for affordable housing among current residents of the Waianae Coast and HCDB’s prior experience in the area, it is anticipated that the residents at HMoM will predominantly be very low and extremely low income individuals and families with existing roots in the community.

Hale Makana Resource Center

The project includes a 2,463 sq. ft. Resource Center, which will provide residents with a variety of useful spaces, including a library and computer center, two multi-purpose rooms and laundry facilities. Additionally, the center will include a reception and lounge, a manager’s office, storage spaces, a public restroom, a covered waiting area and picnic area. A minimum of 5,720 sq. ft. of park space between the buildings will be dedicated to a park and community garden. To increase the use of renewable energy resources and reduce the overall cost of electricity to the project, the development will include the installation of a solar photovoltaic and thermal heating system.
